The captain and chief engineer of oil-supply ship C-Retriever were released after an unspecified ransom was paid [November3] Third-party negotiators are in contact with the kidnappers and the U.S. government has no plans to intervene.

The captain and an engineer were taken away from an offshore supply vessel during an attack October 23 in international waters off the Gulf of Guinea, said a U.S. defense official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the official wasn't authorized to publicly discuss the information.
They were working the Agbami Field for Chevron, working with Pacific Bora. This is the second time this has happened to this vessel.   The two were kidnapped from the U.S.-flagged C-Retriever, a 222-foot ship owned by Edison Chouest Offshore of Louisiana, the official said. The vessel and 11 other members of the crew were released and the two hostages were believed taken to shore in Nigeria.    the closest military vessel was a Dutch navy ship in the Gulf of Guinea with 90 U.S. Marines aboard as part of an Africa training mission.

 An international task force of Marines embarked the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN) landing platform dock HNLMS Rotterdam (L800) as part of a 3-month comprehensive effort to strengthen capabilities with African partner forces in West Africa on Aug. 30.

Somalia pirates: closing the barn door

Haradhere
Merchants Bank of California said it planned to stop wiring the funds to Somalia on February 6, following in the footsteps of a string of other banks that cut off the service since giants Wells Fargo & Co. and US Bancorp ended such transfers nearly a decade ago.
The one-office Carson bank had become a last resort for about a dozen money-transfer businesses that collect funds in U.S. offices and disperse them in Somalia, which has no connections to the international banking system or to such services as Moneygram and Western Union.

[August 16 2013 Somalia pirates a career change,  security guards]

Somalia, once a bastion for piracy, has experienced a decline in ship hijackings. You might wonder what happened to most of the pirate leaders. The UN report has the answer: "To date, neither Mogadishu nor Puntland has seriously prosecuted and jailed any senior pirate leaders, financiers, negotiators, or facilitators." Some former pirates have become security guards for the unlicensed foreign ships illegally fishing on Somali waters. Pirates have always blamed these foreign ships for their own criminal acts of piracy. Now, the pirates have undergone a career change and are joining their arch enemies. Security protection in the high seas has become a booming business in Puntland validating the notion, "if you can't beat them, join them."

Enrico Ievoli: freed ransom?? no ransom?

Hijacked by Somali pirates in December 2011, the ship was released ... after the ransom amount was handed over to the captors.
[April 24]"No ransom, we have done through legal channels, as required by the code of navigation." The owner of Enrico Levoni, freed after four months in the hands of the pirates of Somalia, responds well to those who ask what were the counterparts for the release of ship and crew. The tanker is doing back home escorted by our Navy. The crew is fine. Satisfaction among the Italian authorities, relief from relatives
No reports on sum of the ransom, Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs don’t say if it was paid, though there are little doubts about it. The [Italian]foreign ministry denied the government had paid ransom and said the liberation was the result of "constant pressure'' on Somali authorities, the chemtanker was carrying caustic soda from the United Arab Emirates to the Mediterranean.    Demand for caustic soda declined by around 260,000 tonnes in the second half of 2011 because of shutdowns in the global alumina industry, according to an industry source.

[January 01]Police from Somalia's semi-autonomous region of Puntland near Dhinooda seized 10 pirates bound for MT Enrico Ievoli [9188415 ENRICO IEVOLI ] of Domenico Levoli, chairman and owner of Marnavi.. The M/T Enrico Ievoli was hijacked off shore Oman coastline while it was heading toward the randevouz point with the chinese armed convoy..
A number of them are investors while others were staff. Once a captured vessel has been brought to anchor, is common for pirate hijackers to be joined by the gang's investors a vessel as well as a team of armed guards brought on board to guard the hostages. The MT Enrico Ievoli was hijacked on December 27, while transporting a cargo of caustic soda. She carries a crew of 18, including seven Indians, six Italians, and five Ukrainians. Puntland forces have detained and seized numerous pirates within recent months but have yet to bring them to trial.

Marnavi S.P.A, Napoli, Italy and Marnavi offshore SRL, Napoli, Italy, respectively enjoy an unblemished and outstanding reputation in the safe transport and carriage of liquid chemical and edible oils, and the renderment of offshore services respectively.

To-day they have a modern fleet of 35 vessels trading worldwide with a total capacity of 170000 DWT, These include 13 stainless steel tankers ranging from 26500 DWT.

Leila: RO/RO Released

Somali pirates have released the Panama-flagged, UAE-owned Roll-on/ Roll-off (RO/RO) vessel MV LEILA.. No details on whether a ransom was paid.

“[February 20]A group of pirates hijacked a new vessel this week. The pirates contacted their friends in the Ceel-Dhanaae area after they had hijacked the vessel.

the vessel has not yet arrived at the Somali coast, now in Yemeni waters operating as a mother ship.

Hijackings of Ro/Ro vessels are extremely rare, as the vessels' high freeboards (the distance from the water line to the deck) prevent pirates from easily boarding them.

MV Leila's last known position was at 16.47 N-056.15E, the eastern entrance to the Gulf of Aden, on a course of 260 at 4 Knots, according to MSCHOA.

Beluga Nomination: Skuld and Griffin

Elected new members for a one-year period until 2006:

Does my owners’ P&I policy cover piracy?

* Although P&I cover excludes war risks, the definition of “war risks” does not include piracy (Skuld Rules Appendix 1). This means that P&I risks such as crew claims, cargo damage and pollution will not be excluded on the ground that they are caused by acts of piracy.
However, some owners have piracy included in their war risks cover. For example, the Norwegian Marine Insurance Plan includes piracy as a war risk - see Norwegian Marine Insurance Plan § 15..20-22 (amended in 2010). Members who have insurance cover on Norwegian terms will therefore be covered for piracy P&I claims (such as crew compensation) by their war risks insurance provider rather than their P&I Club. Japanese war risks cover also includes piracy.

Skuld's new Kidnap & Ransom Insurance
Published 15.02.2010

SKULD, one of the world’s leading P&I Clubs, now has the ability to offer its members and clients Kidnap & Ransom cover for world-wide trade together with Griffin Underwriting.

SKULD is a P&I club with a long tradition of providing P&I insurance for shipowners and charterers. With continuing focus on providing first class service, it was natural for SKULD to provide Hull War Risk cover almost a decade ago. The current extension into K&R fulfils shipowners and charterers’ current risk exposure. The increase in piracy attacks has created a situation where owners and charterers face uncertainty in their daily operations. The risk of being attacked and illegally seized, causing disruption in trade, stress and exposure for crew and staff as well as financial insecurity, can be protected with a K&R insurance package.

Piracy attacks are continuing and vessels are seized. The insurance covers provided are uncertain for this risk and owners are left in the grey zone. To get the best protection, owners should have P&I, Hull War Risks and K&R. This package provides a certainty. SKULD can now provide all these covers: P&I, Hull War Risks including Piracy, K&R including Loss of Hire extension. This provides a comprehensive insurance package for owners and includes Skuld’s valued service in any casualty situation.

For charterers, SKULD’s Comprehensive Charterers’ Cover with K&R Loss of Hire extension, will provide the extra security for uncertain exposures in risk areas. If the charterer is liable for hire during a pirate seizure, he is covered for such a loss.

SKULD has elected to use Griffin Underwriting, a well known and experienced K&R provider, to ensure the best cover and service for members and clients. SKULD and GRIFFIN will work together to ensure close hands-on excellent service and assistance should the vessel be seized.

Kidnap & Ransom

Although the number of kidnap incidents vary from country to country depending on a variety of factors, the overall picture is one of an increasing crime. Kidnap gangs operate at various levels, from small street gangs abducting then selling the victim to a larger gang, or guerilla groups and cartels who require considerable revenue to fund their criminal activity.

Trends do occur and recent data suggests that a wider range of people are now exposed - as the most desirable targets are taking better precautions to safeguard themselves and their families from becoming victims, so less wealthy but easier targets become more attractive to the criminals as the victims of their crime.

Without the protection of insurance, kidnap and subsequent ransom demands can result in considerable personal or corporate financial loss. Griffin Underwriting offers two types of indemnity policy to protect personal and corporate assets and to provide the support that is required in the event of an incident; Individual Plus to protect families and businesses and Corporate Plus, tailored to multi-national corporations, with employees across the globe.

In the event of a claim the policy provides financial reimbursement along with advice and assistance helping to bring about the safe and timely release of the victim. Our comprehensive cover will reimburse the ransom payment along with other costs incurred whilst dealing with the kidnapping, including 100% of the consultants fees and expenses. In addition many other costs are also recoverable under our policy, including;

* Legal costs
* Medical expenses and Personal Accident cover
* Reward monies
* Salary replacement
* Interest on any loans taken out to pay the ransom
* Fees and expenses for independant services or advisors
* Rest and rehabilitation costs
* Other reasonable costs & expenses

I am writing this message to all news sites today as I am partly related to Beluga Nomination - vessel that was captured by the Somali pirates. The Shipping Company - Beluga Group - is hiding the information from press, and this is hurting both Russian, Fillipino, and international crew, Russian, Romania, Corean related cargo on board (steel), luxury yachts, etc.
The ship is captured since 24-25th of January. Last week 9-10th of February the pirates have announced their ransom - abt 8.000.000$, however the shipping company - Beluga Group - is tryign to negotiate the ransom down. According to our sources, the ransom in discussion is now $5.000.000. however even this is not being paid by the Owners.
However everyone has to consider and understand the fact, that the Owners/Beluga's risks are insured, and the fact that Beluga Group is trying to negotiate the ransom is most probably dictated by their Insurance company.
This insurance company - Danish based SKULD, at the end, will have to cover the ransom expenses back to Beluga Group. And the longer the negotion lasts, the more money this Insurance company will save, despite having this risk covered. In the meantime the crew, the cargo and all the shippers & receivers are all suffering from delays and constant credibility and contractual loss.
