Eagle: Perogiannakis 1985 bulker hijacked

Handymax bulker MV EAGLE was hijacked by pirates firing small arms and a Rocket Propelled Grenade before boarding the vessel, Cypriot-flagged and owned by the Perogiannakis family, Perosea Shipping Co. S.A., 52,163 dwt in the Gulf of Aden, 490 nautical miles South of Salalah, Oman on passage from Aqabar (Jordan) to Paradip (India) when it was attacked.

African Eagle: bulker uses electric shock fencing

AFRICAN EAGLE was fired upon by a skiff, approximately 30 nautical miles from Mombasa Kenya. The barbed wires and electrical fencings installed on the vessel prevented the pirates from boarding the Bahamas-flagged bulk carrier on 16 November 2010.

Shen Neng 1: taking a Douglas Shoal shortcut?

The Cosco group did not respond to inquiries about Chinese-registered bulk coal carrier Shen Neng 1, aground off the coast of Rockhampton, Australia, 05 Apr 2010.
The Great Barrier Reef stretches for more than 2,500 kilometers along Australia's northeast coast. It covers an area bigger than the United Kingdom and is largest living structure on earth. It is home to hundreds of thousands of species of marine life, many of which are rare.

Speculation has mounted about the possibility that the ship was taking a shortcut.
An MSQ spokesman said the passage was possible, but "poorly executed" by the Shen Neng 1 which was obviously "well outside the shipping lanes".
Commercial and non-commercial fishermen said they saw at least one bulk carrier duck south of Douglas Shoal every day.

[AG] Ariella: crew locked away from Pirates

Antigua and Barbuda-flagged bulker Ariella on February 5, reported that six heavily armed pirates had boarded the ship, but the crew had managed to lock themselves away, HDMS Absalon (L16) Danish command and support ship sent a helicopter to investigate, then a team of specially trained forces in inflatable dinghies to board the ship and regain control.

In this case the ship had registered with naval authorities, was travelling along a recommended transit corridor and was part of a group transit, ensuring the ships had a helicopter within 30 minutes' reaction time. It seems the pirates escaped to their boat before the troops arrived.

NAVIOS Maritime Holdings has confirmed that its 52,068 dwt bulk carrier Navios Apollon was attacked 800 miles off the coast of Somalia on Monday.
Navios in Greece lost contact with the Panamanian-flagged vessel, owned by Navios Maritime Partners, and the last contact from the ship was a report that armed men were boarding the vessel.

M/V FILITSA (Marshall Islands) 23,709 dwt Bulk Carrier

A merchant vessel reported a distress call 111737Z 9 November at position 0.35 S/062.40E (approximately 490 nautical miles northeast of Seychelles). At 110206Z, UKMTO reported that M/V FILITSA (Marshall Islands) was assessed hijacked 513 nautical miles NE of Seychelles. UKMTO contacted the owner at 110400Z who had reached the ship. All that was said was “Somali, Somali.” CTF-151 is assessing with high probability the ship has been pirated. Verbal information received from the CSO of the owners indicates the pirates are already onboard and all communication with the vessel has ceased. It is suspected the pirates are in control of the vessel. There are 22 crew members onboard.
