Monchegorsk: Cypriot naval base explosion



The head of Cyprus' navy, Andreas Ioannides, was among 12 people killed when seized containers of gunpowder exploded its main base. The commander of the Evangelos Florakis base, Lambros Lambrou, also died.
The massive blast at the Evangelos Florakis naval base on the south coast killed at least 12 people and injured 59, state media reported.

The National Guard chief told public radio that the blasts struck among containers of Iranian munitions seized from Cypriot-flagged vessel M/V Monchegorsk in 2009.

Eagle: $6 million ransom, pirates say



Somali pirates have released the Cyprus flagged, MV Eagle,
The bulk carrier was captured on January 17, about 490 miles southwest of Oman while en route on passage from Aqabar (Jordan) to Paradip (India)

Pirates claim they received a $6 million ransom for for the old bulk carrier's release.

Nordneptune: pirates escape abeam Tanzania

The French EU NAVFOR warship Nivôse responded immediately to a distress signal from Nordneptune, a tanker, which indicated she was under small arms attack. The skiffs gave up their attack and moved into Tanzanian territorial waters where the Tanzanian Coast Guard was alerted to continue the pursuit.

All the ships are operated by multinational sea staff. It is the company's policy to work with a balanced mixture of nationalities onboard and ashore.

The company has always been actively involved in the international shipping scene.
The company is a founding member of the Cyprus Shipping Council and Mr. Oldendorff was President of the Council on several occasions. In addition, Mr. Oldendorff was active in many other international organizations over a large number of years.

Cyprus has decided to unload the Monchegorsk


On February 13, the government said in a statement that it had decided to unload the Cypriot-flagged vessel's cargo and "keep it in Cyprus".

The Republic of Cyprus has decided to unload the material on the ship Monchegorsk and keep it on Cyprus


"The Republic of Cyprus has already informed the UN Security Council Sanctions Committee of its decision," it added.

"Unloading the cargo does not involve any danger."

Later, Defence Minister Costas Papacostas told the Associated Press: "There are no weapons. There is material that could be used in the manufacture of munitions."

On Tuesday, Cypriot Foreign Minister Marcos Kyprianou said the UN committee had ruled that the Monchegorsk was in "clear" breach of UN sanctions, but he did not specify what had been found on board or name the cargo's destination.

Russian cargo mv Monchegorsk Cypriot flag


USS San Antonio, an amphibious transport dockship that serves as the command and control centre for the taskforce, boarded the former Russian cargo vessel Monchegorsk, which is registered in Limassol and flying a Cypriot flag.

The ship docked at an Egyptian Red Sea port for a detailed search during which, according to unconfirmed reports, weapons were found.
