Enrico Ievoli: freed ransom?? no ransom?

Hijacked by Somali pirates in December 2011, the ship was released ... after the ransom amount was handed over to the captors.
[April 24]"No ransom, we have done through legal channels, as required by the code of navigation." The owner of Enrico Levoni, freed after four months in the hands of the pirates of Somalia, responds well to those who ask what were the counterparts for the release of ship and crew. The tanker is doing back home escorted by our Navy. The crew is fine. Satisfaction among the Italian authorities, relief from relatives
No reports on sum of the ransom, Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs don’t say if it was paid, though there are little doubts about it. The [Italian]foreign ministry denied the government had paid ransom and said the liberation was the result of "constant pressure'' on Somali authorities, the chemtanker was carrying caustic soda from the United Arab Emirates to the Mediterranean.    Demand for caustic soda declined by around 260,000 tonnes in the second half of 2011 because of shutdowns in the global alumina industry, according to an industry source.

[January 01]Police from Somalia's semi-autonomous region of Puntland near Dhinooda seized 10 pirates bound for MT Enrico Ievoli [9188415 ENRICO IEVOLI ] of Domenico Levoli, chairman and owner of Marnavi.. The M/T Enrico Ievoli was hijacked off shore Oman coastline while it was heading toward the randevouz point with the chinese armed convoy..
A number of them are investors while others were staff. Once a captured vessel has been brought to anchor, is common for pirate hijackers to be joined by the gang's investors a vessel as well as a team of armed guards brought on board to guard the hostages. The MT Enrico Ievoli was hijacked on December 27, while transporting a cargo of caustic soda. She carries a crew of 18, including seven Indians, six Italians, and five Ukrainians. Puntland forces have detained and seized numerous pirates within recent months but have yet to bring them to trial.

Syracuse, March 10 (Adnkronos / Ign) - downpours and wind gusts of up to one hundred kilometers per hour. And 'alert weather in Sicily. Particularly affected the eastern part of the island with schools closed in Catania, Messina and Syracuse.
Precisely because of bad weather, around 9 o'clock this morning a merchant ship was stranded near Syracuse, near Punta Santa Panagia. On board the 'Gelso M.', 150 meters long, 19 crew, rescued by two Coast Guard helicopters and a Navy Catania. Given the impossibility of steering the ship, which was directed to Augusta, the commander ordered the abandonment of the unit. Can not even use the life-saving equipment on board because of the position of the ship aground.
The weather and sea conditions, with winds now up to 40 knots and rough seas, are in decline.

Olib G: small chemtanker in ballast

The chemtanker OLIB G, Malta-flag, Frio Maritime S.A. Greece, in the East part of the Gulf of Aden reported that a skiff was approaching, 08 Sep USS PRINCETON warship of Task Force 151 launched its helicopter. The helicopter was able to identify two pirates on board.

The MV OLIB G was sailing West in the Internationally Recommended Transit Corridor through the Gulf of Aden with a cargo of ballast. IMO 8026608, Chemical/Oil Tanker deadweight 6,375 tons, bt. 1988, gt. 4060, ex Berna Sultan, 2007 ex Yeliz K, 2006 ex Olib, 2000.

Large companies reason that the chances of attack on any particular ship are relatively low — 0.5 percent in the Gulf of Aden — so they play the odds. Smaller shippers simply cannot afford “hardening” their vessels against attack. Three-man protection details from private companies can cost as much as $21,000 per ship.

So security falls to international task forces, such as the Combined Task Force 151, NATO’s Ocean Shield and the European Union’s Atalanta. But these flotillas cannot provide adequate security over two million square miles of ocean. To augment them would be prohibitively expensive; the budget for Atalanta alone was $450 million in 2009. read

Bow Saga: NIS-flag chemtanker hoses pirates

The Norwegian Chemical tanker MV BOW SAGA was proceeding through the transit corridor in the middle of the Gulf of Aden when it came under attack. A pirate skiff with 7 people on board shot at the bridge, damaging the windows. BOW SAGA adopted Best Management Practice and was conducting counter measures with evasive manoeuvring and the deployment of water hoses to prevent attempts to climb up onto the ship. Piracy experts have predicted an increase in attacks in the Arabian Sea in August as the Indian Ocean southwest monsoon eases.

The Norwegian International Ship Register -NIS- was established in 1987.

Since then it has provided the shipping industry with a continuing competitive and high quality option for registration under the flag of a nation with long standing maritime competence.

Norway has been one of the world's largest shipping nations since the late 19th century. This prominent position has been sustained over the years by the ability of Norwegian companies to adapt promptly to changing market requirements.
The NIS combines the advantage of being located in an industrialised nation with competitive conditions, rules, and regulations.

Ships registered in the NIS fly the Norwegian flag and are subject to Norwegian jurisdiction.
Norway’s ordinary shipping legislation applies to them with some exceptions and special rules specific to the NIS.
Norway’s comprehensive code of maritime law also gives creditors the assurance that it represents a secure and professional alternative.
Norwegian law is recognised in the maritime related field as sophisticated and predictable.

Great emphasis has been placed on maintaining a quality register which ensures that vessels operating under the NIS regulations meet highly acceptable safety and working standards.
To ensure this, the rules are based on the obligations accepted by Norway, particularly with regard to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and International Labour Organisation (ILO) conventions.
